How to Pick The Right Floral Preservation Artist

How to Pick The Right Floral Preservation Artist

Bridal bouquet preservation is trending in 2025. If you are new to the idea of preserving your bouquet or if it is all over your inspo board, this is a trend you want to be a part of. Make sure that the studio you select to press your bouquet has the same vision that you have for your flowers and the qualifications to bring that dream to fruition.

Picking the right preservation studio is important! There are a lot of flower pressing hobbyists out there peddling their work as a professional art, it is not. Just because something is cheaper, does not mean it is better. Floral preservation is an excellent example of getting what you pay for. If you see ads or posts in your feed offering a reduced discount, make sure to ask that person for examples of their work. They should quickly be able to share at least five completed designs.

When you are considering which floral preservation artist to choose. Follow these steps to get the perfect bridal bouquet preservation.

1.      Ask the preservationists how many bouquet preservations they are doing every year. As an example, we do around 250. If they have only done five, you may want to reconsider. Or examine their work with the tips below to help guide your decision.

2.      Look for the way they are constructing or building the flowers. Are they doing a full-scale reconstruction or are they pressing the flower whole? Full scale reconstruction means the flower is pressed petal by petal and is reconstructed back to the original flower shape, petal by petal. This is a much more complex and technical process. It is also very time consuming. The results are, without question, more aesthetically pleasing.

3.      Assess their color correction technique. The flowers should be corrected, not painted. Color correction is a specialized technique that enhances the color of your pressed flowers. Typically, during the pressing process, there is significant color drainage from the petals. You should be able to see the variegations of your flower through color correction and blending of the natural colors. The goal of the preservationist when color correcting is to restore the original look of the flowers, while creating a timeless piece. Overcorrecting colors can make the colors look artificial. Ask them if they have taken classes in color theory and light. Ask them about their use of shadowing, a painting technique that adds depth. This is difficult to do without innate talent or through instruction.

4.      Do the flowers look tattered? Ask the preservationist if they are trimming and cleaning their flowers after they have been pressed. I see this step missed all the time. You can tell if flowers have not been trimmed if they appear ragged or uneven. I see this with roses all the time. As an example, roses should be symmetrical in design, not just a hodge podge of petals. Each petal should be the same size and shape. While trimming flowers is a delicate and laborious process, the outcome is infinitely superior.

5.      Evaluate the preservation artist’s design work. Is there balance and movement in their final designs? Flowers should be separated, not congregated. A large grouping of flowers flanked by greens and fillers draws your eye to the center, focusing only one flower. The design should let your eye move throughout the piece; it should simulate motion. The pivotal point of the design changes because there is a flow.

6.      Are custom frames available? Does the artist recommend a mat and museum glass? Where are the frames coming from? Framing is a key component of the design process. You pay a lot of money for your preservation piece; the frame should enhance your floral art commission. Discuss your options with your preservationist?

7.      Do they have a website? While this is not a deal breaker, it does highlight their skills, portfolio, and testimonials. This helps potential clients see the quality of their work. It also positions them as a professional and gives confidence to customers when choosing services.

Establishing trust and expertise are paramount indicators of who you should choose to design your bridal bouquet preservation. Pressing flowers takes skills and is an art form that only gets better through practice and discipline.

Choosing the right floral preservation artist is essential to ensuring your bridal bouquet is transformed into a lasting keepsake. Look for an artist with a strong portfolio, attention to detail, and expertise in preservation techniques like color correction, reconstruction, and design. Select someone that aligns with your vision! You will not be disappointed!
